Dogwood – Lucy

Artist: Charles E. Burchfield

Charles Burchfield adored trees and wildflowers.  He particularly admired the varietals that bloomed in the spring, and often included them in his paintings.  Burchfield painted portraits of his daughters, Martha and Catherine, and included a dogwood tree in each portrait…pink in Catherine’s and white in Martha’s.  Our Dogwood wallpaper was designed by Burchfield, circa 1921.  What appear to be flowers on the dogwoods are not true flowers.  Instead, they are bracts, or modified leaves that look like petals.  The true flowers of the dogwood are clustered at the center of the bracts.
