The Birches
$35.00 – $570.00Price range: $35.00 through $570.00
Artist: Charles E. Burchfield
The Birches is Charles E. Burchfield’s first wallpaper design, created in 1921 shortly after he relocated to Buffalo to work as an assistant designer at the M. H. Birge & Sons Company. Borrowing imagery from his earlier watercolor Bluebird and Cottonwoods (1917), the pattern weaves young birch trees with spring catkins, sturdy cottonwoods, and arching sumac branches into a lively woodland composition.
Burchfield later described The Birches as “just about my favorite” of his Birge designs. Like much of his early work, the imagery reflects close observation of the natural landscapes surrounding his homes in Ohio, translated into a repeating pattern that brings the experience of being outdoors into the interior.
In celebration of Patterned World: The Wallpaper Art of Charles E. Burchfield, an exhibition co-curated by Red Disk at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, The Birches returns to production for the first time in more than a century. This release marks Red Disk’s fifth reimagining of a Burchfield wallpaper and revives Pattern No. 1186, originally produced by M. H. Birge & Sons.
Hand-printed by Red Disk, this inaugural colorway honors the original 1921 design while allowing its movement and natural energy to resonate in contemporary spaces.
