Thistles and Queen Anne’s Lace

Artist: Charles E. Burchfield

During his wallpaper-designing days in the 1920s, Charles E. Burchfield aspired to be, in his own words, “a strong courageous healthy spirit—delighting in the natural world, seeing it with the innocence of a child to whom each commonplace stone, blade of grass & sapling is a miracle.”

Thistles and Queen Anne’s Lace is one of Burchfield’s early wallpaper patterns that he designed while working at M.H. Birge & Sons a century ago.

Reminiscent of designs by William Morris—leader of the British Arts & Crafts Movement—the paper’s motif is composed of Queen Anne’s lace surrounded by blue-violet healall spikes, bulbous common milkweed, and curlycup gumweed (possibly mistaken for thistles).
